You aren’t imagining that your mood is sunnier after spending some time in the sun. A recent research study that looked at the link between sunlight and mental health found that employees were less likely to suffer from poor mental health if they are exposed to sunlight.
The science behind this is that exposure to the sun’s UV rays can boost serotonin production, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in happiness.
In addition to increasing serotonin, sunlight exposure also plays a key role in vitamin D production. Not only is vitamin D necessary for strong bones, but also mood regulation. Research has shown that low levels of vitamin D are linked to mood disorders, including depression and anxiety.
2. Regulates sleep patterns
Our bodies have an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm which governs our sleep-wake cycle. Sunlight helps to regulate this rhythm by helping to balance the production of melatonin, ensuring it rises in the evening when it’s time to wind down.
